the days are just packed [Jul. 2nd, 2007|07:58 pm]
i wish that i had a photograph beautiful enough to capture the feeling i have at the moment, but in all honesty, i've been having too much fun to take any. i thought today that there's no possible way for a life in this fashion, of long days wandering around, hanging out, cooking and sewing to be sustained for long. the ground will certainly drop from beneath my feet soon.

in fact, the feeling has been such that in certain circumstances (watching gang gang dance at the bowery ballroom the other night, in particular) that i've truly felt that the ground would give way beneath me. but for the first time ever, this sort of terrible idea has seemed less terrible. instead of fearing the dreaded unknown possibilities of such a catastrophe, i've been focusing on the physical sensation of falling--what must it be like to have such a thing happen. and though i've no desire to actually find this out firsthand, the thinking about it is kind of pleasant. i imagine that for a split second, it would be a great rush.

anyway, i think it's all just a sort of bizarre (no, not psychotic) way for my brain to wrap itself around this move and put things in perspective. not every day is sunshine and lollipops, but just about. i never thought i'd say this, but i love new york. i really truly love it. i'm inspired and entertained and as close to clear-headed as i've been in a very long time.

and that said, i'd like to inform you of the imminent resumption of the dear birthday way of life. i've been working on a little freelance project, but that finishes up this week and soon i'll be sewing a ton of new things for sodafine and my own badly neglected site. i've also taken on a new shop, flirt, which i'm really excited about. and they're currently stocked with dear birthday items left over from renegade, so if there's something you missed, there's a good chance they can reunite you.

i promise photos next time!
xo

the rumors are true [May. 18th, 2007|10:56 am]
ian and i are moving to brooklyn! greenpoint, to be precise.
as our nearest and dearest know, this move has been talked about and planned and worried over for months and months and now, at last it's time to just go for it. we found a place on monday, signed a lease on wednesday and will pack up our belongings and begin the new york chapter of our lives on june first. it's a terribly/wonderfully stressful and exciting time!

this move will include the resumption of progress for dear birthday, which has been put on a bit of a hold since early winter. having my own dedicated sewing space and being in such close proximity to other makers and enthusiasts is just what i need to get started again. i won't have another site update until fall, but in the mean time, please do visit me and the rest of dans le foret at the renegade craft fair and we will catch up! there's lots of that to do.

la faire des renegades. or...something. [Apr. 28th, 2007|12:25 pm]
hello!

so i am fully aware that it is now *spring* and that dear old dear birthday is still stuck in winter 2006, yes. however it must be stated that online appearances can (and often are) mischievously deceiving; i am busy as a bee (no jokes about our decline, please) sewing up new spring and summer wonders for...you guessed it...the renegade craft fair!
this year i will be joining forces with tamera of dainty and dirty (and who also made our pretty group site) and erika, formerly of mellifluous couture, now of middewynter (and middesummer.) we are currently formulating a plan for a most beautiful ephemeral boutique, by the name of Dans le Foret (in the forest, en francais) and i hope you will all mark your calenders for the weekend of june 16th and stop by for a visit! mccarren park pool in brooklyn! it's going to be so wonderful!

can you tell i'm really excited about this?
i am!
you should be too!
sneak peeks forthcoming.

hooray for spring super sale! [Mar. 28th, 2007|12:16 pm]
i'm in the beginning stages of a major clean up over here in the "studio" and this gorgeous blouse, sadly must go. it is now only $50, shipping included (us only.) desperate? maybe. it's way nicer than a $50 price tag would suggest and it most certainly will not go lower. i'll keep it for myself before i'll give it away. so! it's a size small (34" bust, 25" length) email me (orders at dear birthday dot com) to purchase:

next up is this sunny yellow scallops top, complete with two beautiful liberty of london cotton prints. originally offered for $95, it is now only $35, shipping included (us only.) the only reason this beatiful top didn't sell at any of the three venues it travelled to (two craft fairs and a boutique) is that most ladies are deathly afraid of yellow. if you're not and you're a medium--37" bust (stretches in the back), 25" length--then this is the top for you: sold!

yellow top

click image for closer look. there is also a detail shot in the flickr stream.

thanks everyone! sorry for the everything-must-go attitude, but seriously, everything must go!
a relocation is in the works, the details of which will be announced within the next few weeks. excitement!

vintage dear birthday? [Mar. 25th, 2007|06:24 pm]

i just picked up this lovely, last years' model pleats blouse from a shop in baltimore (double dutch!) where it didn't sell. so! it's here now and it's on sale for blog readers! woo!

made from two liberty of london prints (100% cotton) and a cheery fuschia gingham, the pleats blouse was my favorite style from last spring's collection. it's an easy-fitting, pullover style withe cap sleeves ending in a sweet pleated ruffle. button closure at back neck.
size small (34" bust, 25" length at center back)
it was originally $175, but now it's $75 + 5 shipping = $80! awesome!

first to paypal winz!
(orders at dearbirthday dot com)

there's a yellow scallops tee as well, but i don't have a photo of that one just yet. stay tuned!

ALSO: free shipping on the remaining whale tees! hooray!

fare thee well, oh horrible winter [Mar. 20th, 2007|11:23 pm]

it's been a while. here's some things:

1. i've been cooking lots lately. tonight i made a baked pasta dish with dandelion greens. dandelion greens! food is a source of endless entertainment. i'm beginning to question my goals in life. maybe i just want to cook all day? i owe this newfound (though really, i've always enjoyed cooking...i just never allowed myself to really investigate it much) hobby to erika of middesummer who has offered me a vast trove of knowledge and insight by taking me under her wing as a test client for her holistic health practice. i can honestly say that i've benefitted substantially from her counseling. i'm eating waaaayyyy better than i was before and feeling better too! so yeah. i highly recommend her services. ok! end of spiel.

2. i've not been sewing. but! i have been missing it. and i have some good ideas for future projects. and i'm working on redesigning my name labels into something much fancier. i'm wanting to get much fancier in general. better is always better, you know?

3. i've applied to the renegade craft fair, brooklyn-style with two seamstress friends. given my lack of inventory and short amount of time to get ready for the fair (given the twelve thousand other major things that are going on at the moment,) it seemed like a better idea to share a booth space. i'm really excited about the prospect of sharing a booth with these two ladies (i'm keeping it a secret until we find out whether or not we're accepted) and i just know that our booth will be so totally rad. so! things to look forward to. in the mean time, i regret to say that any updates to the site will happen randomly. an official spring collection is just not in the cards at the moment. but bear with me, my dearies, as i have no intention of throwing in the towel just yet.

4. my birthday was last week! i am now in my final year of my second decade. scary stuff, man. but! i'm not down about it at all. it helps to have friends who also prefer to defy rules regarding what might be considered "age-appropriate," for the wonderful amelia (who was my model for the fall/winter collection) knitted me up an extravagently goofy hat, which i just adore. it's ear-flapped and has a pom pom the size of a large orange bobbing about and weighing down the top. also, ian gave me the most ridiculous book in the world, the haggis-on-whey world of unbelievable brilliance volume three: animals of the ocean, in particular the giant squid. it is insane. and awesomely funny. ha!

5. also in dear birthday/amelia news, she was interviewed for a new dc fashion blog, panda head and gave me a lovely shout-out. hooray!

ok then.
that's all for now.
any questions?
